Solar Panels Not Working During A Power Outage

It surprises many owners: the grid goes down on a sunny afternoon and the panels stop too. In most cases this is the system working as designed, not a repair issue.

What The Sources Say

The Enphase article on anti-islanding (dated October 19, 2026) says that with traditional grid tied systems your array will stop producing during a power outage even if the sun is still shining. It calls the mechanism anti-islanding, says it is a commonly required safety feature that disables microinverters when there is a grid outage, and says it is required under UL 1741 and IEEE 1547. The EnergySage article on solar panels and power outages (updated August 11, 2026) says the shutoff is a safety feature for utility workers and is required by code on nearly every grid tied system. It explains that during an outage the power lines are often what utility crews are working on.

Is It A Fault Or Normal

These signs can fit a normal outage shutdown, but none is proof:

If the grid is back and your system stays off, that is when to look at Solar System Not Producing. Do not reset or switch anything on the system until you have read what your installer or manufacturer says about restarting.

What A Battery Changes

EnergySage says a battery backed system can isolate the house from the grid and run on stored energy plus whatever the panels produce at that moment, and that without a battery or a specialized backup inverter solar panels and outages do not mix. It also says some setups offer a smaller version without a full battery. Whether yours does depends on the equipment installed. See Add A Battery To Solar You Already Have for what adding storage involves.

Questions For Your Installer Or Manufacturer

  1. Is my system grid tied only, or does it have a backup capable inverter or gateway?
  2. If I add a battery, which circuits would it carry?
  3. After an outage, does my system restart on its own, or does something need to be reset?

We have not read the UL 1741 or IEEE 1547 standards themselves, only how the manufacturer and EnergySage describe them.
