Solar Inverter Lights And Error Codes
A light or a code on your inverter is a message, not a diagnosis. Codes differ by brand and by model, so the manual for your exact model is the final word. Below is what three public manufacturer pages say, so you can describe the problem clearly to a service company.
Enphase Microinverter Lights
The Enphase article on IQ Series microinverter status LEDs (dated September 5, 2026) lists four patterns:
| Light | What Enphase Says It Indicates |
|---|---|
| Flashing green | Normal operation, grid function normal, and communication with the IQ Gateway |
| Flashing orange | Grid normal, but no communication with the IQ Gateway |
| Flashing red | The AC grid is either not present or not within the specification |
| Solid red | An active DC Resistance Low, Power Off condition |
The same article says that about six seconds after DC power is applied the light turns solid green, stays that way for about two minutes during startup checks, then flashes green six times. It says short red blinks right after DC power is first applied indicate a failure during startup.
The Solid Red Condition
Enphase says each IQ Series microinverter measures resistance between its PV inputs and ground, and shuts down if the value drops below a safety threshold. It lists possible causes as defective module insulation, damaged wiring or connectors, moisture ingress, or similar ground related issues. It says the condition stays latched until someone clears it, that an IQ Gateway is required to clear it, and that clearing only works if the cause has already been resolved. If it persists after a reset attempt, the article says the installer should inspect the modules, wiring, and connectors. The reset screens it describes are in the Enphase Installer Portal and Installer App, so expect to involve a service company.
Enphase Gateway Lights
The Enphase article on IQ Gateway and Envoy S LEDs (dated July 19, 2026) says the power production light means all communicating microinverters are producing when green, and amber or red means at least one microinverter is not producing. A device communication light that is solid amber or red means at least one device is not communicating. It says both lights are off when devices are not communicating at low light or nighttime, so an off light after dark is not by itself a fault. SMA Event Messages
SMA publishes event pages in its online manuals, and each is marked for a qualified person. Examples from the manual pages we opened, which cover specific models:
- SMA manual page for Event 102: the grid voltage or grid impedance at the connection point is too high and the inverter has disconnected from the utility grid. The corrective measures say to check whether grid voltage is permanently in the permissible range and, if local grid conditions put it outside, to contact the grid operator.
- SMA manual page for Event 301: the ten minute average grid voltage is no longer in the permissible range, with voltage or impedance at the connection point too high, and the inverter disconnects to maintain power quality.
- SMA manual page for Event 1302: either L or N is not connected, or the utility grid has failed. The listed checks are for a utility outage, connected line conductors, a switched on miniature circuit breaker, and an undamaged AC cable.
These pages come from specific SMA models and the numbers are not universal. Find your model on the label and look up that manual.
What To Do With A Code
- Photograph the light or display and write down the exact code, model, and serial number.
- Note the date, time, and weather. Several of the causes above involve moisture or the grid, not a broken part.
- Check Solar System Not Producing for the basics that do not involve opening anything.
- Do not open the inverter or touch DC wiring. Both manufacturers direct fault repair to installers or qualified persons.
- Check coverage in Solar Warranty Help, then book a service company that works on your brand.
If you want a local service company to look at your system, describe it in the system check form. We name the one company before anyone contacts you.
