Bird And Critter Proofing For Solar Panels
The gap between panels and the roof is a sheltered space, and birds sometimes nest there. Nests and droppings can collect debris under the array.
Signs You Have A Problem
- Twigs, nesting material, or feathers at the edge of the array
- Droppings streaking the panels below the edge
- Scratching or noises under the panels
- A sudden production drop or an inverter error
Common Proofing Options
- Wire mesh or critter guard: a galvanized or coated mesh skirt along the lower edge of the array that blocks entry. One example is the Killgerm solar panel mesh kit, described as a mesh and clip system designed to stop birds nesting under roof panels.
- Clips instead of drilling: the same kit is described as requiring no drilling, and clips fit the inside lip of the panel. Check that any kit you consider says the same.
- Cleanout first: a company should remove existing nests and debris before closing the gap.
Questions To Ask
- Does the install touch my panel frame, and does that affect my warranty?
- Do you wear safety gear and carry insurance for roof work?
- Will you clean out nesting material and check the wiring first?
- Is the mesh material rust resistant and will it allow airflow?
