Solar Owner Help In Florida
Florida licenses solar contractors at the state level, which gives an orphaned owner a clear way to vet a new company. Florida owners have also been hit by installer failures, including Pink Energy (see Help For Pink Energy Customers).
Who Licenses Solar Contractors
The Florida DBPR construction industry page lists a Solar Contractor classification (CV and RV) covering the installation, alteration, repair, maintenance, relocation, or replacement of solar panels for solar water heating, pool heating, and photovoltaic systems. Repair and relocation are both in that definition, which matters if you need panels lifted for a roof job.
How To Check A License
The Florida Solar Energy Industries Association consumer page, an industry group, tells buyers to look for a license number beginning with CVC or EC and to verify it at myfloridalicense.com. It flags a mismatch between the company name on a salesperson's card and the name on the contract as a warning sign, and suggests checking a company's history on sunbiz.org. It also suggests asking for proof of liability and workers compensation insurance for the contractor and any subcontractor.
Where To File A Complaint
The DBPR complaint page accepts complaints against licensees and against people suspected of unlicensed activity. It is clear about the limits: discipline is administrative, such as fines, probation, suspension, or revocation, and the department cannot represent you in a civil matter to recover money. The same page lists some quality of workmanship issues and disagreements over contract terms among the matters that may not be within the department's authority. For recovery, it suggests consulting a private attorney. For sales or contract practices, the Florida Attorney General consumer protection page has a File A Complaint link.
Net Metering Status
The Florida Administrative Code listing for Rule 25-6.065 lists a Public Service Commission rule titled Interconnection and Metering of Customer-Owned Renewable Generation, with an effective date of April 7, 2008. It sits in the chapter on electric service by electric public utilities, so if your power comes from a municipal utility or a cooperative, ask it for its own policy. Ask your utility how your exports are credited and whether any change to the system, such as adding panels or a battery, needs a new interconnection agreement.
Storm Season
Florida systems face hurricane season. After a storm, look at the array from the ground, photograph any damage, and call your homeowners insurer before anyone removes panels. If the roof is leaking at the mounts, see Roof Leak Around Solar Panels. Hire only a contractor whose license you have checked.
Steps For Any Orphaned System
- Gather your contract, permit, equipment list, warranty papers, and any loan or lease documents.
- Call each equipment maker with your serial numbers. EnergySage guide to installer bankruptcy (updated January 7, 2026) says manufacturer warranties remain valid regardless of installer status, and that the manufacturer can often point you to installers certified on its equipment. It also quotes a service coordinator warning that if an installer is not certified on your equipment, those warranties could be determined to be void, so ask the manufacturer before you hire.
- If you lease or have a power purchase agreement, contact the company that owns the system before hiring anyone. See Solar Lease Or PPA When The Company Is Gone.
- Check any new company's license with the agency above before you sign, and get the scope and price in writing.
Agency rules, rates, and contact details change. Treat the dates on the sources here as a snapshot and confirm on the agency's own site.
