Help For ADT Solar Customers
ADT, the home security company, got into rooftop solar in 2021 and announced its exit in January 2024. If ADT Solar or Sunpro Solar installed your system, here is what published reports say about warranties and service, and what to do if something stops working. Confirm current contacts before you rely on them.
What Happened
The Solar Power World report of January 25, 2024 says ADT entered the solar market in 2021 by acquiring the dealer Sunpro Solar, which was rebranded as ADT Solar. It says that after closing a majority of its branches three months earlier, ADT announced it would exit the residential solar business completely and continue with its security and smart home business. ADT Solar operated in markets like Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, St. Louis, Miami, and Phoenix, per the same report.
The Security Systems News report of February 5, 2024 adds that the solar segment had an adjusted EBITDA loss of $89 million in the first nine months of 2023, and that the board approved an exit that may include transferring parts of the business to other parties.
What ADT Said About Warranties
In the CNET report of January 31, 2024, an ADT representative said that, regardless of the change in strategic direction, its commitment to the 25-year limited workmanship warranty and the 25-year production promise in its contracts would remain in place. The representative also said manufacturer warranties were unchanged and would cover panels, inverters, racking, and mounting. That was ADT's statement in January 2024. Your contract sets the exact terms, so read it.
Who Was Named To Handle Claims
The Spruce Power release of December 23, 2024 says Spruce Power signed a multi-year service agreement with ADT under which its Spruce Pro unit would facilitate the management and resolution of workmanship and equipment warranty claims for customers of ADT's former solar business. That is the most recent arrangement we found. We did not find a later statement from ADT or Spruce on how claims are handled now, so ask ADT in writing which company handles your claim before you rely on it.
Keep A Written Record
Whatever company answers, put every warranty request in writing, with dates, photos, and production screenshots, and keep the replies.
Who Covers What
| Layer | Where To Start |
|---|---|
| Panels and inverter | The manufacturer, with serial numbers from the labels |
| Workmanship and roof penetrations | ADT, citing the workmanship warranty in your contract. Ask in writing who processes the claim. |
| Production promise | Your contract. Compare its numbers with your monitoring data. |
| Loan or lease | Your lender or the company that holds the agreement |
Steps That Help
- Find your contract. Note whether it says ADT Solar or Sunpro Solar, and find the warranty section.
- Write to ADT. Give your address, the date the problem started, photos, and production screenshots. Ask which company handles your warranty claim and how to reach it.
- Call the equipment makers. Panel and inverter coverage is covered in Solar Warranty Help.
- For a roof leak, document it before anyone changes the array. See Roof Leak Around Solar Panels.
- If monitoring went dark, see Solar Monitoring Stopped Working.
- Before hiring an outside company, ask whether its work would affect your ADT warranty, and get the answer in writing.
